Index Heatmap

Analyse which stocks contribute to the movement of top indices via Heatmap Visualisation.

What is a Heat Map?

If you’ve ever looked at the stock market data and felt overwhelmed by all the numbers and charts, a heat map can be your best friend. It is a simple yet powerful tool that helps you understand market trends at a glance.

Heat Map is a two-dimensional graphical representation of data in a tabular format using a colour spectrum. It is a powerful tool to gain insights into data.

Think of it like this:
If a stock is light green, it’s going up slightly.
If it’s deep green, it’s having a great day.
If it’s light red, it’s down a little.
If it’s deep red, it’s taking a hit.

In the Financial world, the securities trade on a daily basis, which leads to fluctuations in price. Index Heat Map can be extensively used to analyse the movement of the index constituents.

Did you know?

The term 'Heat Map' was first used in the early 1990s by Cormac Kinney, an American software designer.

How to Analyse Index Heat Map

Index Heat Map is a two-dimensional graphical representation of all stocks in the index using different colours; default colours are red and green. The intensity of the colours differs based on the movement of the index constituents. The higher the gain or loss, the deeper the colour intensity.

For example, Reliance and HDFC Bank have fallen by 1% and 2%, respectively. Here, both will be in red, but the intensity of HDFC Bank is more as it has fallen by 2%.

Similarly, if Infosys and TCS have risen by 1% and 2% respectively then both the stocks will be highlighted in green colour, but the intensity of TCS’s colour will be more as it has risen by 2%.

In simple terms, the deeper the fall or rise, the deeper the intensity of the red or green colour.

Thematic movement can also be identified using the Index Heat Map. One can analyse movement and intensity in different sectors. For example, if FMCG is in green and the IT sector is greener than FMCG, then it indicates that the IT sector is more bullish.

The stock or sector with the deepest green indicates the highest gain, while the stock or sector with the deepest red indicates the highest fall. It makes the analysis relatively simpler and provides a broader picture of the market at the same time.

One can further customise the Index Heat Map using multiple tools available on our Heat Map page. The heat multiplier, toggle size, timing, and data source can all be altered. Further, there are multiple style settings available to explore on our Heat Map page.

Uses of Heat Map

Here are some effective ways to use a Heat Map for Trading:

  1. Identify Market Trends:

If most stocks are green, then the market is bullish. If most are red, the market is bearish.

  2. Sector Rotation:

If IT stocks are green while Defence and Railways are in red, it signals a shift in market sentiment.

  3. Spot Outliers:

A single deep red or green stock in a neutral market might indicate company-specific news (earnings, mergers, or quarterly results).

  4. Avoid Emotional Trading:

A heat map helps remove panic or greed, making trading decisions more data-driven.

Conclusion

Index Heat Map is a great visualisation tool and has extensive use in financial analysis, especially by traders. It gives you quick insights into the intensity of movement in share prices and sectors.

Keep in mind that it only represents the movement of index constituents and not the rationale behind the movement, i.e., it is not a clear indicator of whether to take a long or short position. However, one can analyse the broader picture and make the decision combined with other technical and fundamental indicators.
