What is MCX?

The Multi Commodity Exchange of India Limited (MCX), is the leading commodity derivatives exchange in India. It was established in 2003 and is located in Mumbai. MCX launched its IPO in 2012, making it the first-ever exchange to launch an IPO. It is listed on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). The MCX accounts for the majority of the commodity futures contracts traded in India.

There are multiple commodity derivatives which are available to trade on MCX:

  • Metal:

    Aluminium, Copper, Lead, Nickel, Zinc.

  • Bullion:

Gold, Gold Mini, Gold Guinea, Gold Petal, Silver, Silver Mini, Silver Micro, etc.

  • Agro Commodities:

Cotton, Crude Palm Oil, Kapas, Mentha Oil, Castor seed, etc.

  • Energy:

    Crude Oil, Natural Gas, etc.

Trading Holidays

The MCX observes several trading holidays each year. These holidays are either national and regional festivals or government holidays. The MCX entirely directs these holidays, and it may change the list of holidays for which a circular will be issued in advance.

Keep in mind that holiday dates can vary from year to year. Therefore, it’s crucial to keep an eye on the trading holidays and plan the trades accordingly.

Trading Session

Trading in the commodities derivatives segment at MCX is divided into two parts:

  • Morning Session: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

  • Evening Session: 5:00 p.m. – 11:30/11:55 p.m.

Except for Saturdays and Sundays, trading occurs every day of the week.

Settlement Holiday

A settlement holiday is when the settlement of financial transactions in a securities market does not happen. During a settlement holiday, the clearing and settlement processes are suspended and put on hold for that day. No securities or funds are exchanged between the buyers and sellers although an individual can withdraw the fund from their trading account. Settlement holidays are often observed for various reasons, including public holidays and market-specific events.

Muhurat Trading

'Muhurat Trading' means a special trading session held in the Indian stock markets on the auspicious festival of Diwali. The term 'Muhurat' means auspicious beginning. Investors and traders throughout the country offer prayers to Goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesha.

On the day of Diwali, Muhurat trading is held during a specific time in the evening. The exact timing for the same is fixed by the stock exchanges in India, and generally, it lasts for an hour.
