What is a dividend?

A dividend is a company's distribution of profits to its shareholders. It is generally in the form of cash but can also be in the form of additional shares of stock or other property. Dividends are usually paid out regularly, often quarterly, and are a way for companies to share their financial profits with their shareholders

What are the types of dividend?

There are four types of Dividends:

  • Cash dividend:

Shareholders receive a portion of the company's profits in the form of cash.

  • Stock dividend:

Shareholders receive additional shares of stock instead of cash.

  • Property dividend:

Shareholders receive assets other than cash or stock, such as real estate or inventory.

  • Special dividend:

This is a one-time payment to shareholders, often when a company has an exceptionally profitable year or wants to distribute excess cash.

What are the Key dates related to a dividend?

There are four main dates related to dividends:

  • Declaration Date -

The date the Board of Directors announces the dividend. It is also known as the Announcement Date.

  • Record Date –

The date on which the dividend-paying company decides whether the eligible shareholders will receive the dividend.

  • Ex-Dividend Date -

The date by which you need to purchase the shares to be eligible to receive the dividend. Generally, it is two days before the record date, as settlement takes two days in most markets. Shares purchased today will be credited to your demat account in T+2 days (Trading day + 2 days). As of December 2023, we have a T+1 settlement in India, so the Ex-Dividend date is one day before the record date.

  • Payment Date –

As the name suggests, it is the date on which the final payment of dividends is made to the shareholders.
