What is BSE?

The BSE is one of Asia’s oldest stock exchanges. It was established in 1875, and is located in Mumbai. It is home to the 'Sensex,' one of India's most widely followed stock market indices. It lists various financial products, including equities, fixed-income securities, derivatives, and ETF units.

Trading Holidays

The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) observes several trading holidays each year. These holidays are either national and regional festivals or government holidays. The BSE entirely directs these holidays, and it may change the list of holidays for which a circular will be issued in advance.

Keep in mind that holiday dates can vary from year to year. Further, trading holidays can vary amongst different segments, such as equity, currency and commodity markets. Therefore, it’s crucial to keep an eye on the trading holidays of each segment and plan the trades accordingly.

Trading Session

The trading session of the market includes three sessions, one before the market’s opening, which is known as the pre-market session, the regular trading session, and the closing session.

  • The pre-open or pre-market session starts at 9:00 a.m. and lasts for 15 minutes (from 9:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.). The Pre-market session is further divided into two parts: Order Collection / Entry period and Order Matching period.

  • Order Collection / Entry Period

It lasts for 8 minutes from 9:00 a.m. to 9:08 a.m. In this, the facility of order entry, modification and cancellation is provided.

  • Order Matching Period

This period immediately starts after the Order matching period. During this time, order addition, modification or cancellation is not allowed.

  • The regular trading session is from 9:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays, i.e., Monday to Friday.

  • The post-market session or the closing session of trading takes place after the regular stock market session closes. It is scheduled from 3:40 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on trading days and is allowed only for the equity segment.

Settlement Holiday

A settlement holiday is when the settlement of financial transactions in a securities market does not happen. During a settlement holiday, the clearing and settlement processes are suspended and put on hold for that day. No securities or funds are exchanged between the buyers and sellers, although an individual can withdraw the fund from their trading account. Settlement holidays are often observed for various reasons, including public holidays and market-specific events.

Muhurat Trading

'Muhurat Trading' means a special trading session held in the Indian stock markets on the auspicious festival of Diwali. The practice of Muhurat trading was initially started by BSE in 1957. The term 'Muhurat' means auspicious beginning. Investors and traders throughout the country offer prayers to Goddess Laxmi and Lord Ganesha.

On the day of Diwali, Muhurat trading is held during a specific time in the evening. The exact timing for the same is fixed by the stock exchanges in India, and generally, it lasts for an hour. Both equity and derivatives segments are open for trading during Muhurat trading.
